Modpacks explained: what they are, what they cost in RAM

What a modpack is, why it eats memory, and how to size a server for one.

A modpack is a curated list of mods, plus config files, packaged so everyone can install the exact same set. Instead of hunting down 150 mods and matching versions, you install one pack.

Why modpacks need more RAM

Every mod loads code and data into memory. New blocks, items, and mobs all have to be registered. Mods that add machines, pipes, or farms keep running in loaded chunks even when nobody's looking. Big packs also add world-generation features, so exploring costs more.

A rough rule: the more mods, and the more of them that run automation, the more RAM. Light packs are fine on 8 GB. Big kitchen-sink and tech packs can want 16 GB or more once the world gets going.

The client matters too

Your players need enough RAM on their own PCs. A server with 32 GB doesn't help a friend whose launcher only gives the game 2 GB. Most launchers let you raise this in the profile settings.

How to install a modpack on your server

  1. Check the pack's loader and Minecraft version. Our modded plan runs Fabric.
  2. Get the pack's server files (most packs publish a separate server download).
  3. In the panel, stop the server, then upload the server files in the Files tab.
  4. Start the server and watch the console. The first start takes a while.
  5. Have everyone install the same pack version in their launcher.

Or skip all of it. Tell us the pack on Discord, and we'll install it, check it starts, and send you the address.

Before you buy for a heavy pack

Ask first. We test heavy packs before promising a plan size, instead of selling you one and hoping. It's free to ask.
