Backups: how they work, how to restore, how to download your world
Panel backups, Valheim world backups, restoring, and getting a copy of your world.
Your world is yours. Here's how to keep copies of it and get it back.
What you get
- 8 GB and 16 GB plans: 5 panel backups
- 32 GB plans: 10 panel backups
- Valheim: panel backups plus Valheim's own world backups
A panel backup is a snapshot of your server's files: world, configs, plugins, mods. Automatic backups run on a schedule, and your plan holds 5 or 10 at a time. Lock any backup you want to keep so it can't be deleted by accident.
Make a backup by hand
Do this before anything risky: a game update, adding mods, changing server type.
- Open the panel and pick your server.
- Go to Backups and click Create backup.
- Give it a name you'll recognize, like
before-1.22-update.
Restore a backup
- Go to Backups.
- Find the backup and choose Restore.
- Wait for it to finish, then start the server.
Restoring replaces the current files with the backup. If you're not sure, make a fresh backup of the current state first so you can go back.
Download your world
From Backups, choose Download on any backup. You get an archive of the whole server, including the world.
To grab just the world:
- Minecraft: in the Files tab, the world is the
worldfolder. Paper also hasworld_netherandworld_the_endnext to it. - Valheim: the world is two files,
YourWorld.dbandYourWorld.fwl, in the worlds folder (usuallyworlds_local). You need both.
You can download your world anytime, for any reason, including moving to another host. We don't lock it in.
If a backup won't restore
Don't keep retrying over the top of it. Open a ticket or post on Discord. A real engineer will look at it.
